For ‘England’ read ‘Britain’ and the words give you the flavor of pomp and pageantry that re an everyday facet of life in a country where regard for the monarchy never wavers though the politician hits bottom in popularity. But it is also the land of fish and chips and the Beatles; of hard-headed City of London men and soft-hearted families who regard their domestic pets as near humans. But above all it is a land of wry, understated humor and stiff upper lips with a tradition of losing every battle except the last and most vital one. Once Britain had a mighty Empire and has given it away in chunks; but it is still ‘the old country’, ‘the mother country) and ‘home’ to peoples all over the world, some of whom have never seen it.
