For ‘England’ read ‘Britain’ and the words give you the flavor of pomp and pageantry that re an everyday facet of life in a country where regard for the monarchy never wavers though the politician hits bottom in popularity. But it is also the land of fish and chips and the Beatles; of hard-headed City of London men and soft-hearted families who regard their domestic pets as near humans. It has many tonfues – some of 30 dialects so varied and so regional that the Geordie from Tyneside and the Cockney from London cannot understand one another (and neither can comprehend the burr of the Shropshire lad). But above all it is a land of wry, understated humor and stiff upper lips with a tradition of losing every battle except the last and most vital one. Once Britain had a mighty Empire and has given it away in chunks; but it is still ‘the old country’, ‘the mother country) and ‘home’ to peoples all over the world, some of whom have never seen it.
