Among Scandinavian countries, Denmark is the most liberal about drinking and boatloads of Swedes occasionally descend to make a night of it. And there is always the Tivoli, open only 1 May – 15 September.

There are many tours of Copenhagen organized by Tourist Board. Some by water, others to enable you to see something of modern Danish life (‘Life-seeing tours’). The Glyptotek near the Tivoli Gardens is full of eceptionally good sculpture, a selection of paintings by the French Impressionists and a collection of classic pieces, Greek, Roman and especially Egyptian. You can visit the royal reception rooms every day except Monday. Here to is the Royal Library, which includes among its rare manuscripts records of the early pre-Columbian Viking voyages across the Atlantic. Thorvaldsen’s Museum is a monument to the great sculptor and the Borsen, oldest stock exchange in the world, is still used as much. Vor Frelser’s Kirke (Our Saviour’s Church), with an outside spiral staircase is a vantage point for viewing the city.
