Famous statue of Christ the redeemer at Corcovada Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Occupying nearly half of South America, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and is bigger than the continental United States. Everything is on a scale to match… the sprawling Amazonian jungles with broad leafed trees and enormous shrubs… great pine forests in the Rio Grande… parched deserts in the northeast… the Iguacu Falls, higher and larger than Niagara… no fewer than 4,603 miles of Atlantic coastline… and the tall, white buildings of Rio de Janeiro reaching up between bare, purple mountains.

And then there are the people; as racially mixed as any in the world; friendly, hospitable and uninhibited. They work hard – and play hard as well on the beautiful beaches and their Carnival is the gayest in the world. Diamonds, sugar, coffee and rubber all come out of Brazil and there are still huge areas of the country that have scarcely been opened up. Some historians have suggested that Sir Thomas More was inspired by travelers’ tales of Brazil when he dreamed up his Utopia. And the historians could be right because this land of the exhilarating samba and suberb cuisine will probably inspire you.

Carnival in Rio is wild. For the four days preeceding Ash Wednesday (late February, early March) the city goes mad. There are all night custome balls in hotels and clubs; processions by te Escolas de Samba in their traditional colors; Mascarados (hooded clowns); floats and communal dancing in the streets. Everyone joins in. On New Year’s Eve, go down to the beaches to watch the Macumberious making offerings to Yemaja, the goddess of the sea (Macumba is a relatively mild form of Brazilian voodoo). In September and October, Rio holds an International Song Festival that is very popular.
