Northern lights is an ancient astronomical phenomena. The old Nordic culture called it “spirit dance” and said the lights were reflected light from oceans of fire. Northern peoples believed that the auroras were places of the dead. With ancient beliefs about the marvelous polar auroras behind us, today’s science can understand the curtains of shining and billowing lights for the natural spectacle of energy.

The magnetosphere of the Earth emanates from the north pole, and located directly above them are magnetic sinkholes where solar winds and radiation seep into the ionosphere layer of our atmosphere. The solar winds are a continuous flow of subatomic particles from the Sun’s atmosphere that pass throughout our entire solar system. As the energy from the Sun comes in contact with the magnetosphere, the energized solar particles, mainly electrons and protons, follow the magnetic lines and get drawn to the poles.

Midnight Sun in Alaska – Meaning of Alaska Name

Alaska, our 49th state, lies in the far northwest corner of the North American continent and includes the Aleutian Islands. The Alaska mainland is due north of Honolulu. The Aleutians extend as far west as New Zealand.

The name ‘Alaska’ was derived from an Aleut word meaning ‘great land,’ and every inch of Alaska lives up to its name, with the highest mountains on the North America continent (Mt. McKinley, 20,300 feet) and rivers long and mighty (Yukon, 2,300 mles). It’s a big and beautiful country from the steep-walled fjords of southeast to the wide horizons of the Bering Sea coast. In the summer the sun shines 18 to 24 hours. In winter it’s a Jack Frost wonderland awesomely illuminated by the Northern Lights. It’s also a sportsmen’s favorite, with big fish and big game.

Midnight Sun Tracking Across Arctic Sky

Alaska is not a land of ice and snow. It is in the same latitudes as Norway, Sweden and Scotland. In the Arctic and in the area around Fairbanks, it is dry and cold with subzero temperatures in the winter, but quite warm and sunny during the summer months. Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula area have weather comparable to the Midwestern states of the United States. The southern coastal are are warmed by the Japanese currents. Although the temperatures are not extremely warm or cold, much rain falls the year in these cities. The days of rain on the chart above are for southeastern Alaska only, and do not reflect the weather conditions in the interior. Best months to visit are May trough October.
