Sin City was hit hard by the recession, but don’t bet against this legendary destination, which got a boost from the summer 2009 blockbuster The Hangover. Last year, 79 percent of tourists (29,467,000 people) chose to stay at hotels right on the Strip like Caesar’s Palace—the choice of the movie’s zany four-pack. And why not? Roll out of bed and onto the Strip to catch the Bellagio fountains in action, shop, gamble, and, of course, people-watch (which can get especially fun later at night).

Annual Visitors: 22,500,000

Straddling the borders of the U.S. and Canada, this massive waterfall spills about six million cubic feet of water—from a height ranging from 70 to 188 feet—every single minute. While there are about 500 taller waterfalls in the world, Niagara Falls is spectacular for its sheer power. It’s also more accessible than many major falls, a short flight or drive for millions of regional tourists.

Quebec is a province of dense forests in the north, with only isolated fly-in hunting and fishing camps; this gives way to farmlands and smallholdings in the south of Quebec province. Quebec, Canada’s oldest city, is built on a promontry rising steeply on the left bank of the St Lawrence. Narrow streets wind up from the waterfront Lower Town to penetrate the encircling walls of Upper Town. The pastel colored roofs of the old Lower Town houses, the predominance of French signs, the Boheman Latin Quarter and the quaint horse drawn carriages (caleches) invest Quebec with a unique Old World charm. Prominent among the new warehouses and commercial buildings of Lower Town is the Basilica of Notre Dame des Victories, built 1699. The wall between ‘towns’ has been converted into Dufferin Terrace, a wide promenade 1,400 feet long and magnificently situated overlooking the river. Behind is the graceful bulk of Chateau Frontenac, an old Canadian Pacific Railway hotel.

The Ursuline Convent, one of the oldest girls’ schools on the continent, was founded in 1639 and the Catholic Seminary in 1663. On the flat plateau above the town are the Plains of Abraham where Wolfe defeated Montcalm in 1759, taking Quebec for the British. The battlefield itself is now a park, popular with skiers and skaters in winter. Parliament Buildings, standing in landscaped grounds, are in 17th century French Renaissance style. There are guided tours of the attractive inner chambers. Also on the Plains are an interesting Provincial Museum and Bois de Coulange, the seat of the Lieutenant Governor of the province of Quebec. The highest part of Quebec is Cape Diamond, crowned by the Citadel, summer residence of Canada’s Governor General.

What to See in Brussels Belgium Vintage Exhibitions Ads

The great set-piece of Brussels ,s the Grand’ Place which is the city’s first market place and dates from the 12th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt during the 17th century and has been variously described as an ‘architectural jewel’ and the ‘world’s most beautiful parking lot.’ The Town Hall in the Grand’ Place was completed in 1449 and has a collection of Brussels tapestries.

Also in the Grand’ Place are the Maison du Roi and the many Guild Houses which serve as reminders of city’s past. Not far from the Grand Place is the statue of Mannekin-Pis, much loved by the Belgians and the so-called personification of Belgian ribaldry. There are a number of lovely of St Nicholas, Church of Notre-Dame du Sablon, Church of Notre-Dame Aux Riches-Claires, the Church of St John the Baptist ‘au Beguinage,’ the Finistere Church, the Chapel of la Madeleine and St Michael’s Cathedral. Also worth seeing are the Bourse, the Palais de la Nation, the Place de Brouckere and the Place Royal. The Theatre de la Monnaie is one of the world’s leading opera houses and the Hotel Ravenstein s the last remaining mansion of the Burgundian Court here. Of the museums, one of the best and most justifiably popular is Erasmus’ House (rue de Chapitre 31). The Brueghel Museum (rue Haute 132) isalso well worth a visit.

Other museums include the Musee d’Art Ancien (3 rue de la Regence); the Musical Instruments Museum (17 Place du Petit Sablon) and the Iseles Fine Arts Gallery (71 rue Jean Van Voslem). Outside Brussels it is possible to visit the site of the Battle of Waterloo.

Panama’s narrow land mass divides the oceans of the Pacific and Caribbean and for centuries it has been a natural short-cut between the two great oceans. It was from Panama that the Spanish set out to explore South America and discovered the legendary treasure of the Incas. The gold was shipped up to Panama City and carried across the isthmus on muleback to Portobelo. So much royal wealth attracted roving buccaneers and in 1671 the two towns were sacked by the English pirate, Henry Morgan – later governor of Jamaica. During the Californian Gold Rush, Panama again came into its own as an inter-ocean route and proposals to build a canal were mooted. After delays and false starts a treaty was finally agreed between Panama and the US, granting a narrow strip of land for the construction of a canal to be run as a US government corporation. The first ship passed through in August 1914. The country today has a prosperous business community and its economic stability relies heavily on the great ‘ditch’ that now forms part of its coat of arms. Panama is an enviable trade crossroads and this is reflected in its low-duty shops where there are Siamese bronzes, Swedsh crystal, fruitwood from Guatemala and Scottish cashmere. The population is a mingling of races. Over 60% are of mixed blood, owing their ancestry to Spanish, Indians, Jamacans and other Latin Americans. In the jungles of Darien are long-haired Choco Indians living in river huts of woven reeds and lashed palm fronds. In the San Blas islands are the picturesque, closely-knit Cuna Indian tribes.

See the hotels along the beach; walk along Lincoln Road with its fine shops. Don’t miss seeing the causeways to Miami Beach; Hialeah Park andits flamingos; Musa Isle Indian Village, somewhat touristy, but interesting; James Deering Estate; University of Miami Campus; Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard; Venetian Pool, Tropical Park Race Track. The Red Adams and Grey Line have regular contucted sightseeing tours of Miami and the vicinity. Boat trips around Miami offer a different perspective of the beautiful homes. Blimp and helicopter tours are also available but expensive. If time permits, drive (or take a Greyhound bus) on the Overseas Highway to Key West; the road itself is unique, as is Key West. Another interesting ride is to the west oast of Florida on the Tamiami Trail, an extraordinary straight road. A one-day trip north to Hollywood Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach is worthwhile.
