Slovenia is a lush country So is capital city Ljubljana… Even so green, Ljubljana is the third greenest country in Europe. The surrounding neighbors of Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary … Now we can start to visit this green capital.
Since we went to this famous city in December, we didn’t realize that greenery but we were convinced that Ljubljana did not take the title of green capital in vain with the help of our journeys in the country and our imagination.
Most of the country is covered by the Slovenian Alps, and thanks to its abundant forests, more than 60% of Slovenia is green. Slovenia, one of the countries that separated from Yugoslavia, had gained its independence in 1991. The people who lived here must have suffered a lot from the war and chaos, and now they are enjoying their lives in easy mode. People seem to be very friendly and helpful.
We can go a little further and say that Slovenia is closer to western Europe than other ex-yugo countries. We think that geographical location has an effect on this. Another reason is that this place is actually the largest investment area of the Yugoslavia period. Of course you don’t understand this when you walk down the street, but we investigated it.
A well preserved history
As in many European capitals, a river runs through the city, which separates the old and new centers of the city. The side where the castle is located and the remaining part of the castle is called the old center of the city and the other side of the river is called the new center of the city. The spaces along the river reveal the most beautiful part of the city.
Each bridge that connects the two sides has a separate story. All of the bridges offer valuable and beautiful views. In the meantime, compared to other ex-socialist countries, it is not possible to see the architectural traces of socialism while walking in the center of Ljubljana. You don’t see wide streets and streets or mono block structures. You surprised us in that respect, Ljubljana.
Where to stay in Ljubljana
Since Ljubjana is a small city, you can choose to stay in a hostel in the old town or in the new city. After this lively nightlife, you don’t have to go back to bed. We stayed in a guesthouse called Gloria. We can recommend this house which is only 8 minutes walk from Preseren square to all the Turkish people because of the host 🙂 Do you know what the super host who is sweet or sweet good? When we told him that our jacket was stolen on the bus, he gave us his own jacket and said, gibi If you’re cold enough, you’ll get cold. The hotel had a price of 59 euro for 2 people per night. You should spend Friday and Saturday nights here. Since this is a small student city, we are sure you will spend your time very, very nicely.
When to get to Ljubljana?
Look, this is so important. You should come to Ljubljana, the greenest capital of Europe’s greenest country, in spring. Like us woohaaa neee Slovenia ??? Let’s just say gideliiiiimmm and fall on the roads in December, you only dream about green. We made a mistake, you don’t. Because of this mistake, we will come to Slovenia again in the spring. Yes, we will. Because if you’re aware, we haven’t even been able to take a lush photograph!
Places to visit in Ljubljana
Places to visit in Ljubljana will not take more than 1 day. Of course, since we do not know your enthusiasm for visiting museums, this will vary according to museums. There are plenty of museums and art galleries around the city. As the starting point of the tour, we recommend Preseren Square.
After seeing this square, you can walk along the river to see both the beautiful bridges and many nice restaurants & cafes. You can cross the Preseren square and visit the Old Town and then walk to the castle. After taking a panoramic city photo at the castle you can close and switch to Metelkova. The next day you can roll on the grass of the Tivoli park and then head back to Metelkova.
Castle of Ljubljana
If you’ve wondered what a bird’s eye view of Ljubljana is, just climbing to the castle is enough. This magnificent castle, which was the protector of the city, was built in the 11th century and became the present day in the 12th century. You didn’t think there was a price for this beautiful view and getting to the castle, did you? You were wrong! There is a steep slope and it will take 10-15 minutes depending on your performance.
There is a great vintage shop as a bonus at the beginning of the road leading to the castle and you can find many rare items belonging to Yugoslavian period here. We noticed that we shared many values of the popular culture of that period. In this shop you will find many things that will take you to your childhood. You can also rent the Pony, which is the socialist era bike, for 5 hours for 2 hours or 12 euros for the whole day.
Preseren Square
He was named after the most famous poet of Slovenia. Ferenc Preseren’den Christmas square in this square, a special Christmas market was established and brought here the largest Christmas tree in Slovenia. Since we visited the city during this period, this was the most beautiful point of the city for us. The intersecting roads in front of the square are called Tromostovje. Of course, the gate is not here today and it becomes the square today because of the city walls that were destroyed in the 19th century. This square also houses a 17th century church. In the middle of the square is a statue depicting our poet Ferenc Preseren.
Tromostovje Bridge
As for the story of the Tromostovje Bridge, the Turkish translation presents a triple bridge and an image of a change we have not seen before. 3 intersecting bridges in this way has a purpose. The bridges on the right and left sides are made for pedestrian travel and arrival, while the bridge in the middle is for the passage of vehicles. If we think that Preseren Square is closed to traffic, we can say that the purpose of this vehicle transition is no longer valid.
