Cagaloglu Hamam, is one of the most magnificent Turkish baths in Istanbul and a lovely example of 18th century Turkish architceture. Many celebrated figures have bathed here, including King Edward VIII, Kaiser Wilhelm, Franz Lizst, Florance Nightingale, King Fahd, Tony Curtis, and Sean Connery, and many more have visited incognito.
Thought to date from the reign of Mahmut I (1730-1754) Cagaloglu Hamam is double Turkish bath consisting of two sections, one for men and one for women. Both sections have the same architectural design. This unusually high and spacious hamam covers a total area of 2834 square metres.
The domes above the main bathing halls are supported by eight graceful marble columns. Built of khorasan cement, the outer walls are 1.5 metres thick. Cagaloglu Hamam is the most famous of all the city’s historic baths, and has featured on television programs in countries all over the world. The New York Times alone has published three articles about the building over the past ten years.
