Loosen your belt, take a deep breath, and pitch in: Nice is a gourmet’s paradise, at low (for France) prices. This is mainly because the fixed price (“prix fixe”) meal in Nice is no rarity, but the general rule. In a city with over one hundred and fifty restaurants, there are less than ten which offer only ala carte selections. And, while a Parisian restaurant normally serves three courses on its “prix fixe,” the restaurants in Nice throw in four or five.
This, remember, is the city where the Frenchman comes to relax: the meals are huge and delicious.
Moreover, the most you need pay for one of these four-course feasts (except in the first class or de luxe restaurants) is not much-and there are spots in town, for almost the same meal! Hope and I have had at least one course at each, and can advise that there’s only the subtlest of differences between the highest and lowest-priced. We’ll discuss them in descending order of price, and suggest that you carefully note whether the charge includes service and /or wine.
