Off and on the Boulevard St. Michel Only a few steps from the “St. Mich’,” on the tiny Rue Champollion, which runs off the Rue des Ecoles, the Hotel Central des Ecoles, Rue Champollion, has an English speaking proprietor who appears busily engaged in both modernizing and “humanizing” his hotel.
A lounge, a reading room and a public television set are among the latest additions to this simple but pleasant house, where room prices are a reasonable, breakfasts included. A high recommendation…. And right on the Boulevard St. Michel, the big Hotel de Suez, 31 Bd. St. Michel (all included), is the outstanding choice for readers who don’t mind a fair amount of noise from the strollers below. Unprepossessing entrance, but quite comfortable rooms.
If you’d prefer to stay closer to the Seine, at the base of the Boulevard St. Michel, then, as you leave the St. Michel metro exit, look to the left and you’ll see two tiny streets: Rue de la Harpe and Rue de la Huchette. At #1 Rue de la Harpe, the Hotel d’Albe is the hotel par excellence for readers who like to be surrounded by color and excitement; while the Hotel du Mont Blanc, 28 Rue de la Huchette, in the same bustling neighborhood, is another superb second class choice, most of whose rooms come with private bath or shower.
On the Seine itself, and in the same area, the Hotel de Suede, 15 Quai St. Michel, is a nicely-decorated little place, breakfasts included, and with many such rooms facing directly onto the river.
Nearby, the Hotel Notre Dame, at 1 Quai St. Michel, is somewhat cheaper, not quite as cheerful, but still on the river.
