Hurra Bier: Denmark and Danish Beer Culture

Among Scandinavian countries, Denmark is the most liberal about drinking and boatloads of Swedes occasionally descend to make a night of it. The Danes also make two of the world’s most famous beers: Carlsberg and Tuborg – you can visit the breweries. Normally Danes drink an ice cold glass of akvatit (schnapps) to start the evening accompanied by a fishy snack. With the real food you drink wine or beer.

That other famous local product, Cherry Heering (cherry brandy) goes with coffee. Good places to pass in Copenhagen are around the Nikolaj Kirke, such as the inner room of the Cafe Royal, La Cubana and the Club de Paris. Hviid’s Vinstue in Kongsten Nytorv has considerable character. Single people may find companionship at the Wonder Bar or the Kakudu Bar. And there is always the Tivoli, open only 1 May – 15 September.
