The Alton Dam, on the Mississippi River at the foot of Easton St., is best viewed from the approach to the Lewis-Clark Bridge, Broadway and Langdon. Largest of the series of 26 dams under construction between Alton and Minneapolis, the dam helps provide a 9-foot channel, solving the navigation problems caused by the unpredictable shifting of the Mississippi’s current. The lake formed by the dam will eventually be developed as a recreation spot.
