Would you like to go to a village next to the center of Amsterdam and find yourself in that village in a dream or in the fairy tales we dreamed of when we were little? If your answer is “Yes işte, here is my fairytale village Giethoorn travel guide.

Giethoorn is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Discovered and visited by tourists in recent years, a huge increase in the number of tourists in this village, the name of the first time taken in 1958 and considered one of the milestones of Dutch film history “Fanfare” announced after the film. The village is built on the edge of a large lake. It consists of small islands, ponds and reeds. Over 170 bridges and islets connected to each other is provided by bridges and boats. Here is a village where you will find the tranquility of Giethoorn with all these features and magnificent farm houses.

How to go?

Giethoorn can be easily reached by car, bus or day trips from Amsterdam center. The roads to the village are so enjoyable that you do not understand how 1.5 hours have passed. On the lush roads, wind mills are coming, and tiny village houses are accompanied by your journey. You take a look at the grazing animals and the colorful nature while watching the joyful nature.

What to do?

If you want to wander around the village in detail, the kayak alternative may make more sense because some bridges belong to private property while you are walking and you are not allowed to visit some areas. The last hour to rent a boat is 4:00. You complete your tour in 1 hour and after 17.00 the boats that go through the canals belong only to the inhabitants of the village. We first visited the village with a motorboat.

Contrary to what I expected, the officers did not use our boat. They briefly told us how to use it and gave us a simple map. We started our tour with a little confusion, a little tense but quite curiously clinging to the edge of our boat. As we proceeded between the houses, we realized that there was no danger other than the little rubbing of the boats with the peace that the environment gave us.

As we walked through the village, we noticed that there were rules for the canals. For example, traffic in channels one-way, you can not return. To return, you need to connect to the lake at the back of the village and walk around the village.

A small note for families with children; we did this tour with our five year old son Efe. We didn’t encounter a disturbing, dangerous situation. He especially enjoyed the part of the boat we visited, and he was very happy to be able to hold the tiny steering wheel from time to time.

Walk around the village

As I mentioned, the bridges connect you to tiny islets. If there is only one house in these islets and it is private property, you can see the sign ‘private property, no entry ortasında in the middle of that bridge. There is a walking route in the village. Unfortunately, you can’t move around in other areas. Even if you can’t cross the bridges, it’s enough to watch that kırmızı famous red shutter house ta on a wooden bench. Of course, these familiar sentences in mind, ‘people live in these houses’, ‘man’s life here extends’

Stay in the hotels, enjoy the restaurants

If you want to say haba a day tour here is not enough for me, I would like to say hello to the new day kenarında. We will definitely consider this alternative on our next tour. We saw restaurants while touring our canals in the canals, and we chose the place where we would like to have lunch. There are so many nice restaurants in such pleasant places that it is really hard to choose.

Visit the Giethoorn Museum

The Giethoorn Museum is located in the center of the village where you can examine the farm houses and the details of the farm life years ago. In this museum, small organizations are held on certain dates, concerts are given. If you are lucky, you can come across such an organization. That’s all I can say with the fairy tale village, words are not enough to tell the peace I feel. If one day your way to Amsterdam, don’t forget to visit this beautiful village.
